5 Diwali Looks That Feel Special

Rich zari, soft satin and easy georgette — our favourite festive pieces for puja, parties and every Diwali plan in between.

The edit

Diwali means more colour, more shine and more reasons to dress up — but you also need outfits you can live in all evening.

Here are five pieces that look special and still feel easy, from zari silks for the puja to lighter drapes for parties and hosting.

Bright enough for the lamps

For Lakshmi Puja, nothing beats a warm, glowing colour. Orange and gold catch the diya light beautifully and look stunning in every family photo.

01 · Sarees

Classic zari, lighter on the shoulders

If you love the look of a heavy silk but not the weight, a silk blend with woven zari gives you the same festive richness — and is much easier to manage through a long day of visits.

02 · Sarees

For the Diwali party

Card parties and Diwali dinners call for something with a little glamour. Satin drapes fluidly, has a soft sheen under party lights, and pairs well with simple, statement jewellery.

For hosting all evening

If you are the one opening the door, serving the mithai and lighting the rangoli, you need a drape that moves with you. Light georgette stays graceful even after hours on your feet.

When you would rather not drape

Not every Diwali look has to be a saree. A sunny yellow kurta with embroidered ethnic motifs feels bright and festive, and it is perfect for cooking, hosting or a quick round of visits.

Diwali tips

How to wear a saree all night

  1. 01

Pin the pallu near the diyas

Loose pallus and open flames do not mix. Pin your pallu neatly at the shoulder and keep it tucked close when you are lighting lamps or sparklers.

  2. 02

Press the pleats the day before

Iron and fold your pleats in advance. You will drape faster on the day, and the saree will sit neatly for longer.

  3. 03

    Pick fabric for the plan

Choose silk or silk blends for the puja and photos, and lighter satin or georgette for parties and long evenings of hosting.

  4. 04

    Balance the jewellery

With heavy zari, keep jewellery simple — studs or a single statement piece. With a plain or satin saree, you can go bolder.

  5. 05

Choose footwear you can stand in

Festive evenings mean hours on your feet. Block or kitten heels, or embellished flats, will carry you through far better than skinny stilettos.

  6. 06

    Carry a small fix-it kit

A few safety pins, a mini comb and blotting paper in your clutch can save a look halfway through the night.

If you are buying just one piece this Diwali, choose the orange zari silk for the puja — it feels the most festive. Add the satin drape if you have parties lined up, and keep the kurta handy for the busy days in between. Happy Diwali!

Worth the look.

Questions, answered

Which saree fabric is best for Diwali?

For puja and family gatherings, silk and silk blends with zari feel the most festive. For long evenings, parties and hosting, lighter fabrics like georgette and satin are easier to move in and more comfortable over many hours.

How can I make a saree comfortable for a whole evening?

Pick a lighter fabric, pin the pleats and pallu securely, wear footwear you can stand in for hours, and keep a few safety pins in your bag for quick fixes.

Can I wear a kurta instead of a saree for Diwali?

Absolutely. An embroidered kurta in a rich colour looks just as festive, and it is a great choice if you will be cooking, hosting or running around all day.
